Things I Love Thursday // 4.29.21

An Evening with Girlfriends

As our hostess and ultimate gourmet gal put it, "The Joys of Being Vaccinated" --so lovely. Thank you, Jill, for having (most of) our Foodie Night gang on your gorgeous patio last night. The weather was cooperative, the food was outstanding, and the company was divine. We began with a champagne toast to Science, worked our way through this beautiful tray of goodies, feasted on one of the best salads I've had --jam-packed with goodness and dressed in so much flavor (we didn't have the linked Kale Caesar --but the dressing was VERY similar and should literally be served on almost everything), then we finished with Jill's insane (not hyperbole) cookies. Bliss.

My Early Mother's Day Gift

Swoon. I'm in love with my Operetta crossbody that arrived this week. It's a splurge, for sure, but as you can see, it pairs great with my Target t-shirt and linen skirt! Balance, people. Balance.

"Am I doing this right?"

Polish

It's certainly not the first time I've blogged about this Sally Hansen Insta-Dri polish. It always goes on in one coat and I love it (because that's all I ever carve out time for). I picked up a new shade for spring at the grocery store last week. This one is called Hail Cherry and it's a cheerful orangey-red.

Garden Surprises

Looky looky! Our first babies from the garden have made an appearance. We planted 4 tomato starts this year and hope to have even half the harvest we enjoyed last year. So long as we can keep the squirrels and raccoons at bay, we might have a chance. I'll keep you posted because, as you know, I'm basically a farmer now.

Virtual Community Potluck

My friend, Anne, texted a couple weeks ago, "I'm going to host this interesting dinner thing via Zoom. It's a community potluck, but there will just be four of us around my actual table. Do you and Greg want to come?" Me, "YES. Sounds confusing and fun. We'll be there." Fixa-Plate is the brainchild of Kathren Martin, a theatre professor, who came up with the concept: a community potluck to come together around the virtual kitchen table in order to share recipes and talk about the past and the future of Charlotte. There are several steps that come together to create the event. Participants create a "pod" (invite a few friends to their home for the dinner), choose a favorite recipe to share with the larger community group (in advance), and for the meal each "pod" makes a meaningful main dish (and perhaps 1-2 side dishes). In addition, your pod prepares one of the community members' side dish (that you've been "assigned" in advance --another pod is cooking and eating the favorite dish you shared earlier). Everyone enjoys their meals with Gran's biscuits that Martin has delivered to your door (it's her great-grandmother's recipe). Dinner is served in tandem across the community as each pod logs-on to the virtual experience. You're able to see other groups of friends and family as they sit  around dining tables that stretch across Charlotte. Martin was an exceptional facilitator! She effortlessly and thoughtfully lead us through discussions around social justice, economic disparity, gentrification, and the history of Charlotte --all the while making us feel warm, welcomed, and a valuable part of the conversation. There was a nominal fee to participate (Martin allocates 40% of the proceeds to local nonprofits and charities) --but I'm so sorry to report that the event dates have passed. You missed it --or at least, this part of "It." Martin plans to build out the created and shared content of these dinners (in addition to other components) into an artistic production by Fall 2021. I look forward to seeing where she and her team takes us. While you missed participating in one of these unique dinners, you can watch the process unfold on Instagram by following the hashtag #fixaplate. If we're all very lucky, her concept will catch on and more of these events will be offered in the future --perhaps not only here in Charlotte, but elsewhere as well. In the meantime, follow @MixedMetaphorsProductions for more community engagement opportunities in Charlotte and to possibly become a part of the finished piece!

Twilight Garden Party

The on-again/off-again sunny weather has me craving spring and both looking forward to and reminiscing about having friends over for outdoor gatherings (both tediously planned and impromptu). I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to share some pictures of the backyard party we hosted last fall for Greg's company.
With rented picnic-style tables, borrowed adirondack chairs, professional catering, and lots of help with the details (like following these thorough directions on how to string your own lights), the party was a huge success.
The dinner buffet was set up overlooking the picnic area under the lights.
Burlap table runners, gourds, Ikea lanterns, and tins stuffed with wrapped cutlery decorated the tables.
We squeezed nuts around the votive base inside the lanterns to add an autumnal touch.
Standing cocktail tables and corn hole games were set up for after-dinner socializing.
The caterers came equipped with a bar (beer on tap + wine) and sound system. (Not to mention, fantastic help!)
Cardstock, popsicle sticks, chalk marker, nuts, and little terracotta pots were used to make the menu tents.
I went a little nuts on Pinterest and had the best time setting up the S'mores bar!
We filled mason jars, baskets and decorative canning jars with the typical goodies + lots of extras.
I found chalkboard-sided wooden boxes (used upside-down as stands) at TJMaxx and the chalkboard menu tent at Michael's.
It was hard to limit our featured flavors to just these four.
I made the banner from card stock, twine, wooden clothes pins, and my handy chalk marker.
We set up the fire pit/roasting station beside the s'mores table and added a little pile of blankets in case it got chilly.
After things were mostly set up and before our guests arrived, the girls and I sampled the food and beverages.
(BTW, I do have full eyebrows. Not sure why only half of them showed up in this picture.)
As the sun set, the guests arrived to our glowing backyard shindig.
In hindsight, we could have used another table. It was a cozy dinner!
Post-dinner s'more making.
I couldn't have pulled it off without my partner-party-planner, Emma!
Cheers!

Harry Potter Birthday Party (Part II)

Here are a few overdue details from our Harry Potter Birthday Party.
I bought the glasses on Amazon and then added a little masking tape around the nose piece.
The pens were used in a couple simple games I had the kids play. These are Crayola markers and colored feathers from the craft store. Turning them into "quills" just took a squeeze of hot glue and a stem of black pipe cleaner wrapped around the spot where the feather was attached.
The cupcake toppers were assembled with cocktail picks, scrapbook paper, black pipe cleaners, a little ribbon (for the snitch wings), and toothpicks (for the broom). In hindsight, I messed up the number of quaffle balls (there should be just one red) and the bludgers (there should be 2 black)--so don't make your set like mine.
You cannot have a Harry Potter party without wands. I was so happy to find mine from a small seller on Etsy. The price was terrific, the quality was great (detail, sturdiness, variety of colors), and the tips were appropriately "dull" for the age of the kids who received them.
Crafting and assembling the broomstick bags was the next step. The broomsticks are made from 2 lunch-sized brown paper bags and a little ribbon. I used the wands as the broomsticks.
Once standing, the strips of the outer layer "relax" a bit and take on more of the characteristics of a full and bushy broom.
We stuffed our take-away gift broom bags with a pair of glasses, the wand, and a couple of Harry and Ron's favorite wizard treats: Chocolate Frogs and Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans.
Cheers to your little wizard!

Harry Potter Birthday Party | Part I

This little sugar wanted the same themed birthday party her sister had at 7 years old. Which was great because I'd done all the planning beforehand and even saved a lot of the "stuff."
It was a Harry Potter-Faux Slumber-Movie Party!
"4:30pm - 8:00pm
Wear your jammies and bring a special blanket, stuffie, or pillow to cuddle while we watch the movie."
Hedwig balloons greeted the guests and were scattered all over the house. And each guest got to leave with one too.
Homemade quills, paper plates, and play-doh were all we needed for a couple quick games
Pizza came next.
I'd also planned to serve "Butter Beer Floats;" however, these 12 were already so wound up I decided against it. Seriously.
A little singing to the birthday girl…
… and then Quidditch CUPCAKES!
After dinner and dessert, we headed upstairs to the "theater" to snuggle-in for our birthday showing of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
We had a movie-time treat bar (which had to be removed about 20 minutes into the movie, as it become clear that some guests were going to eat themselves sick if given the opportunity).
Our partiers left with broomstick treat bags.
Each bag had a wand, a pair of Harry's glasses, a couple Chocolate Frogs and some of Bertie Bott's Every-Flavour Beans. (Very Wizard-y.)
I put the hubby to work at the last minute when I remembered that the "Thank you for helping me celebrate..." tags hadn't been fastened to the treat bags yet.
Daddy to the rescue!
Hoping everyone had a wizardriffic time. I know my little Potter-ista did and that's what counts the most.
***I have a second post with more party/craft details HERE.***
